HHPS E-Portfolio
Outcome I
To plan, Implement, & Evaluate a program to address issues of health, athletics, or recreation
This Artifact was completed in HHPS 564, Sport Facilities & Event Management, and evaluates the athletic facilities at Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas. Utilizing a combination of both quantitative and qualitative methods, the project evaluated key areas, including safety, cleanliness, equipment condition, security, and space utilization. This artifact supports the planning, implementation, and evaluation program competency by identifying key facility needs, such as weight room overcrowding, locker room upgrades, and improved access control after school hours, as well as recommendations including facility expansion, additional personnel to maintain the facility, enhanced security protocols, and a long-term capital improvement plan. It helped me understand that strategic planning and evaluation can elevate the safety, performance, and the program wide effectiveness of athletes, and I gained practical understanding of how practical it feels as a coach to implement changes throughout an athletic structure.
This artifact was completed in HHPK 528, Sport Psychology, and focuses on the Assessment of Coaching Tone (ACT), an observational tool used to evaluate how coaches communicate with athletes through both content and tone. The ACT system assesses components including autonomy support, motivational climate, and rapport and highlights the influence of a coach’s tone, both positive and negative, on athlete's motivation, confidence, and performance. This artifact focuses on the competency of planning, implementing, and evaluating programs in athletics and illustrates how a coach's behaviors can be systematically evaluated and improved to enhance athlete outcomes. ACT supports the process for coaches and administrators to develop communication tools, take advantage of supportive, mastery oriented coaching approaches, and measure the impact on athlete development. Through this project I further developed a deepened appreciation of how intentional coaching communication acts as a program-level intervention to enhance the athlete experience, reduce burnout, and promote long-term success in athletic settings.
